Four Players Qualify for Spots in the Main Draw
DALLAS, Feb. 7, 2022 – The first round of the main draw for the 2022 Dallas Open began today at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex on the campus of SMU. Competition also included four qualifying matches which produced the final players advancing to the 28-man singles field.
The afternoon session saw the first main draw singles match of the tournament. South Africa’s Kevin Anderson won 88 percent (30/34) of his first serve points – including 21 aces — to defeat the USA’s Sam Querrey in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Anderson will face Dallas-resident John Isner on Wednesday evening.
Before a packed house in the evening, American No. 8 seed Brandon Nakashima topped Australia’s John Millman 7-5, 7-6. Nakashima won the final three points of the match to take the tiebreaker 7-4. He served up 15 aces en route to the win and will advance to play the winner of Tuesday’s Feliciano Lopez (ESP) vs. Jordan Thompson (AUS) matchup.
Play concluded with Isner and Jack Sock, both Americans, winning the first doubles match played on the Stadium Court. The duo knocked off Aleksandr Nedovyesov (KAZ)/Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi (PAK), 7-6, 6-4, and ran their career record as a tandem to 20-7.
In the first doubles match of the night, played on the grandstand court, Peter Gojowczyk and Oscar Otte of Germany against Daniel Altmaier (GER) and Andres Seppi (ITA) in a three-set thriller, 6-0, 5-7, 11-9.
Final Qualifying Matches
Number one seed in qualifying Vasek Pospisil defeated Christopher Eubanks in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(3). The Canadian won 83 percent of his first serves (34/41) and saved all three of the break points he faced. Over his two qualifying matches, Pospisil won 89 percent (73/82) of his first-serve points.
Austria’s Jurij Rodionov advanced, coming back after dropping the first set to Chinese Taipei’s Jason Jung, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Rodionov also saved five of the six break points he faced in the match.
Liam Broady defeated Thomas Fabbiano in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. The match was closer than the score would indicate but lasted only one hour and 23 minutes.
Germany’s Cedrik-Marcel Stebe won a tight match with Japan’s Yosuke Watanuki, 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4. Stebe saved six-of-eight break points faced, which proved key to the match. The players combined for 25 aces.
