Dallas Resident John Isner Defeats Kevin Anderson in Second Round Thriller;
No. 1 Seed Taylor Fritz Defeats Jack Sock to Also Advance
DALLAS, Feb. 9, 2022 – Second-round matches for the 2022 Dallas Open got underway Wednesday at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex on the campus of SMU. Top seed Taylor Fritz and third-seed John Isner each won their matches in the evening session.
The 24-year-old Fritz, ranked No. 19 in the world, defeated wildcard Jack Sock in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Fritz won 93 percent (26/28) of his first serve points, including 11 aces. Fritz will take on No. 7 seed Marcos Giron in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Isner, a Dallas resident, defeated South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in a match that went to three- tie-breakers, 7-6(1), 6-7(7), 7-6(5). The match featured 56 aces between the two players. Isner won 89 percent (67/75) of his first serve points, including 30 aces. The match lasted two hours and 30 minutes.
“This is my home. This is where all of our family roots are now,” Isner said after the match. “It’s pretty amazing to have this tournament here. To see it come to fruition like this and to see it be so successful fan-wise is excellent.”
Isner will play the winner of Thursday’s noon match between Jurij Rodionov and Vasek Pospisil. Giron came back to defeat British qualifier Liam Broady, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Giron won 80 percent (32/40) of his first serve points.
In early matches, France’s Adrian Mannarino, the No. 5 seed, defeated American Steve Johnson, 6-7(2), 6-2, 7-6(2), and Jordan Thompson beat No. 8 seed Brandon Nakashima, 7-5, 7-6(1). Andreas Seppi defeated Daniel Altmaier in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In the doubles draw, the Mexican duo of Hans Hach Verdugo and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela defeated Americans Denis Kudla and Max Schnur, 6-3, 7-5, while top seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer beat Serbian brothers Ivan and Matej Sabanov, 7-5, 7-6(5). The last doubles match of the day, featuring all-Americans, saw Giron and Nakashima defeat Evan King and Alex Lawson, 7-5, 7-5.
Thursday’s Session 9 will begin at 12 noon (gates open at 11 a.m.), while Session 10 will start at 7 p.m. (gates open at 6 p.m.).
