No. 2 Seed Reilly Opelka and No. 4 Seed Jenson Brooksby Advance; Singles Quarterfinals Begin Friday
DALLAS, Feb. 10, 2022 – Second-round matches for the 2022 Dallas Open were completed Thursday at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex on the campus of SMU. Second-seed Reilly Opelka (USA) and fourth-seed Jenson Brooksby (USA) each won their second-round matches as all of the tournament’s top four-seeds move on to the quarterfinals on Friday.
Opelka, ranked No. 23 in the world, knocked off Cedrik-Marcel Stebe (GER) in a hotly contested  two-setter, 7-6, 7-6. The American won 10-8 in the second set tiebreaker. Opelka closed the match with his 28th ace of the contest, second most so far in the tournament (John Isner served up 30 aces on Wednesday).
Opelka will now face No. 5 seed Adrian Mannarino (FRA), who downed Yoshihito Nishioka (JPN) in the second match of the evening, 6-3, 6-1.
The 21-year-old Brooksby, ranked No. 54 in the world, defeated Italy’s Andreas Seppi, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Brooksby won 83 percent (38/46) of his first serve points, including five aces.Brooksby will take on Jordan Thompson in the quarterfinals at noon on Friday.
In the first match of the day between qualifiers, Canada’s Vasek Pospisil defeated Austria’s Jurij Rodionov, 6-7(3), 7-6(6), 6-2. Pospisil saved one match point and four-of-five break points in the match,.
In doubles, Dallas resident John Isner and fellow American Jack Sock downed the German duo of Peter Gojowczyk and Oscar Otte, 6-0, 7-6. Isner and Sock advance to the doubles semifinals on Saturday.
The second doubles draw saw Sweden’s Andre Goransson and former SMU standout Nathaniel Lammons defeat No. 4 seed Australians Luke Saville and John-Patrick Smith,
7-6(3), 7-6(2). Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara beat No. 2 seeds Austin Krajicek and Hugo Nys, 7-6(4), 3-6, 10-8. Top seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer defeated Marcos Giron and Brandon Nakashima, 6-1, 7-6(4).
Friday’s Session 9 will begin at 12 noon (gates open at 11 a.m.), while Session 10 will start at 7 p.m. (gates open at 6 p.m.).
